This small box from Samsung can hold 2TB of a special type of RAM worth tens of thousands of dollars – the CXL memory module box is being hailed as the future of expansive server memory in the era of AI.

At MemCon 2024, Samsung showcased its latest HBM3E technology, talked about its future HBM4 projects and unveiled the CXL memory module package, also known as CMM-B, the latest addition to its module portfolio Compute Express Link (CXL) memory.

CMM-B is essentially a memory pool appliance for rack computing leveraging CXL. It supports disaggregated memory allocation, allowing available memory capacity to be shared in remote locations across multiple servers. With this, CMM-B enables independent allocation of resources within the rack cluster and allows larger memory pools to be allocated as needed. With bandwidth up to 60 GB/s, Samsung says the CMM-B is ideal for applications such as AI, in-memory databases, and data analytics.
