Man appears in court charged with ‘sexual assault’ of 70-year-old woman near Bearsden Park

A suspect has appeared in court following an alleged sexual assault near a park which left a 70-year-old woman “scared to leave her home”.

The pensioner was walking near Colquhoun Park in Bearsden, east Dunbartonshire, when she was allegedly pushed to the ground and sexually assaulted by a man on Friday March 22.

The incident is believed to have happened around 5.15pm near Station Road.

Police Scotland said the woman did not need hospital treatment, but a detective investigating the case said she was “extremely upset and scared to leave her home.”

On Saturday, the force announced that a 37-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and that a report would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Suspect Martin Hackett appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court the same day, where he was charged with sexual assault with intent to rape with injury.

Hackett, of Glasgowdid not enter a plea and was remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance.
