Five years after the wrongful detention of Paul Whelan – United States Department of State

December 28 marks the fifth anniversary of the unjust detention by Russian authorities of American citizen Paul Whelan. After a secret, closed-door trial, Paul spent years working in a Russian penal colony. In the past year alone, he has been the victim of attacks by other prisoners and harassment by Russian state media.

For too long, Paul and his family have suffered the consequences of the Russian government’s decision to unjustly detain American citizens. Using people as political pawns is unacceptable. Since President Biden took office, the United States has secured the release of more than forty wrongful detainees, and not a day goes by without the U.S. government making an intensive effort to bring Paul home. We will not rest until he is safely back with his family, where he belongs.
