Countering Houthi maritime attacks – US Department of State

The United States today designates one individual and three entities to facilitate Iranian financial assistance to the Houthis, which enables attacks on international shipping and other destabilizing activities. Those designated today facilitated the transfer of millions of dollars to the Houthis under the leadership of U.S.-appointed Sa’id al-Jamal, a Houthi financial facilitator backed by the Security Guard Corps’ Quds Force. Islamic Revolution and based in Iran.

Continued Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have disrupted the free flow of trade in the region and put innocent seafarers at risk. Since October, the Houthis have launched numerous missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles at commercial ships transiting near the coast of Yemen, in clear violation of international law.

The United States will continue to combat illicit Iranian financial support for the Houthis. We call on the international community to firmly oppose the destabilizing activities of the Houthis and their Iranian supporters.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force is a United States-designated entity. The Treasury Department’s action was taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended. For more information on this designation, see the Treasury press release.
